How MyBankFinder ranks banks

Every review on MyBankFinder is built from the same standardized, weighted rubric — so you can compare institutions side by side with confidence. Our ratings are data-driven, updated continuously, and never influenced by advertisers.

The MBF promise to readers

Our commitment to you

MyBankFinder exists to help everyday savers make smarter decisions about where they park their money. That mission only works if you can trust us. Here is what we commit to on every review we publish:

  • We work for the reader, not the banks

Our rankings are produced by an editorial team that operates independently from any commercial partnerships. No bank can pay for a higher score or better placement.

  • Our data is fresh

Rates and fees are re-verified against each bank's public disclosures on a daily basis. Every review shows a published and last-reviewed date.

  • Our methodology is public

The same weighted rubric is applied to every institution we cover. If you can't reproduce a score from the criteria on this page, we consider it a bug and we fix it.

  • We're honest about how we make money

MyBankFinder may earn a commission when readers open an account through an affiliate link. Those partnerships are disclosed and never influence our scoring or conclusions.

  • Reader feedback changes our reviews

If a rate, fee, or product changes and we haven't caught it, tell us — we aim to update the affected review within 48 hours.

What we evaluate

We score each bank across six weighted categories on a 0–5 scale. A bank can earn up to 5.0 stars overall, and no single factor can override the others.

Deposit rates

Weighted at 25% of the total score

25%

Real APYs on savings, money market accounts, and CDs — compared against national averages and top-quartile competitors.

  • Pulled from each bank's public disclosures and verified against live listings.
  • Refreshed daily — an APY change is reflected within 24 hours.
  • Promotional rates are noted separately and don't count toward the standard score.

Fees and minimums

Weighted at 20% of the total score

20%

Monthly maintenance, minimum balance, overdraft, ATM, wire, and early-withdrawal charges. Fewer fees, higher score.

  • No-fee checking and savings receive the highest marks.
  • Waivable fees score lower than permanently waived fees.
  • Overdraft programs that block transactions beat those that levy NSF fees.

Product breadth

Weighted at 15% of the total score

15%

How many consumer deposit products a bank offers — HYSAs, CDs, MMAs, checking, plus specialty accounts (custodial, business, IRA CDs).

  • A wide menu isn't required for a high score, but it helps consumers who keep everything under one roof.
  • Specialty products (IRA CDs, custodial) count as bonuses when they're competitive.

Digital experience

Weighted at 20% of the total score

20%

Mobile app quality, online account opening, budgeting tools, chat responsiveness, and hands-on tests of ACH, mobile deposit, and external linking.

  • Combined iOS and Android app-store ratings feed the base score.
  • We open real accounts to time the flow end to end.
  • Broken links, opaque disclosures, or forced phone calls lower the score.

Customer support

Weighted at 10% of the total score

10%

Availability (phone, chat, email, branch), average wait times, and the quality of self-service resources.

  • 24/7 live human support scores higher than business-hours-only or chatbots.
  • We test response times across weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

Financial stability & trust

Weighted at 10% of the total score

10%

FDIC/NCUA insurance, BauerFinancial or Weiss safety ratings, capital ratios, and recent regulatory or CFPB actions.

  • Every institution on MyBankFinder is federally insured.
  • A clean regulatory record and strong capital ratios lift this component.

How the overall rating is calculated

Each category is scored on a 0–5 scale by our editorial team using the criteria above. The category scores are then weighted and averaged to produce the final star rating you see on every review page. Ratings are rounded to one decimal place.

ScoreTierWhat it means
4.5 – 5.0ExceptionalBest-in-class rates, low fees, and strong digital tools.
4.0 – 4.4Very goodSolid across the board with one or two minor drawbacks.
3.5 – 3.9GoodCompetitive in some areas but average or limited in others.
3.0 – 3.4FairAcceptable for specific use cases but not a top recommendation.
Below 3.0Below averageSignificant weaknesses in fees, rates, or customer experience.

Where our data comes from

We don't rely on a single source. Our rate, fee, and product data is compiled from:

  • Each bank's official website and publicly filed rate sheets
  • FDIC and NCUA institutional records
  • CFPB consumer complaint databases
  • Independent rate surveys (e.g., Bankrate national survey) used as cross-checks
  • App-store user ratings on iOS and Android
  • Hands-on testing of digital platforms by MBF editors

How often reviews are updated

Rate-sensitive content is reviewed on a rolling schedule. Each bank review displays both a published date and a last reviewed date. If a bank changes a major fee, APY, or product lineup, we aim to update the review within 48 hours.
